Firefighters from across the area battled a serious blaze at Corus near Redcar.

Crews from Grangetown raced to the Lackenby steel-making works just after 2pm yesterday following a spillage of molten steel in the continuous casting plant.

They were joined by another nine fire engines, which spent a total of eight hours at the scene. A total of 60 firefighters were involved.

No-one was hurt, but production was halted.

Mike Picknett, incident commander, said: "On arrival, crews discovered a metal spillage in various parts of the Concast plant. A number of small fires had started.

"Our priority initially was people, so we had to establish quickly with Corus managers whether anybody needed to be rescued.

"We quickly ascertained that everybody was accounted for and there were no injuries."

Mr Picknett said the operation was "significant" in terms of resources.

"It wasn't a big fire - it was where it was which caused problems. We needed a very high volume of water to cool down the machinery and the structure of the building. …
