A County Durham initiative to spot promising young golfers starts at The Wynyard Club's David Leadbetter Academy today.

The first of two batches of youngsters, split between over 100 juniors up to the age of 12 nominated by their clubs, will be put through their paces.

After a second session on October 7, the academy's Senior European Director of Instruction, Andrew Nicholson, and certified instructor Stuart Clayton will help the county executive select a junior squad.

The squad will receive bursaries enabling them to embark on an extensive free coaching programme.

Said Durham president Ted Kirtley: "For a small county, we have not done too badly so far with golfers like Graeme Storm, Robert Dinwiddie and Simon Robinson coming through our programmes.

"But all the advice we have been getting from the professionals is that coaching is starting younger and younger these days ( and you have to adapt."

Durham's initiative is similar to one started by Northumberland at the start of the 2005 season, which targeted older juniors. …
