New Era Opens with Mystery; Valdosta Begins Season against Team from Utah That Is Already 2-0

Rick Tomberlin's first game as Valdosta High football won't be an easy one.

Nor will his first opponent be a familiar one.

The Wildcats open their 2006 season tonight against Jordan High, which is making a cross-country trip from Sandy, Utah.

Though Jordan doesn't have the national reputation of tradition-rich Valdosta, which has won 23 state titles, the Beetdiggers are one of Utah's top-rated teams. And they're looking forward to the challenge of playing the Wildcats.

"It's going to be fun,'' Jordan High quarterback Sean Taylor told the Salt Lake Tribune. "It's a new brand [of football]. They've got a good reputation, a lot of national titles and stuff.''

Jordan is already 2-0 this season and outscored its opponents 91-13.

Valdosta hired Tomberlin after a disappointing 7-5 season last year, which included a second-round playoff exit. Tomberlin, who won three state titles at Washington County, says his team faces a difficult opening test. …
