Five New Arrests for Bigg Market Assault

Five men were arrested yesterday [Fri] by police investigating an assault in Newcastle's Bigg Market which left a man fighting for his life.

The men, who are all in their 20s, were being held in connection with the attack on Michael Cunningham [correct] who suffered a fractured skull after being punched while defending a female friend.

The 27-year-old, of Gateshead, was initially placed on a life support machine after the attack, on September 9.

He remains in a serious condition in Newcastle General Hospital, where his mother and grandfather are understood to be at this bedside.

Following the attack, police released CCTV footage of a group of men they wanted to speak to in a bid to track down the attackers.

And yesterday officers arrested four men from Birtley, Gateshead, and a fifth from Killingworth, North Tyneside. This brought the total number of people arrested in relation to the attack to eight.

Det Insp Lee Buzzeo [correct], of Newcastle CID, said: "Following extensive inquiries, we made five arrests. …
