Shands will hold second heart health summit

Shands Jacksonville is hosting its second annual African-American Heart Health Summit on Sept. 15 at the Wyndham Hotel.

The focus of the free event is prevention and awareness. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for African-American men and women, according to the American Heart Association. The event will include stress free health screenings and information on the new drug BiDil, which organizers said, is showing promise in treating African-Americans with heart disease. The guest speaker is Keith Ferdinand, clinical professor of the Cardiology Division at Emory University, and chief science officer for the Association of Black Cardiologists. Shands is expecting 250 to 300 people to attend, and seating is limited. To attend the event, at 1515 Prudential Drive, call 244-4245.

AMERICAN ACCESS NAMES NEW COO, MARKETING HEAD

American Access Technologies Inc. Wednesday announced its board of directors appointed Tim Adams as president and chief operating officer. Adams had been the Keystone Heights-based company's vice president of sales and marketing.

Adams succeeds interim president Erik Wiisanen, who continues his role of vice president of sales and marketing for the company's Omega Metals division.

MPS ACQUIRES COMPUTER SERVICE SPECIALIST FIRM

Jacksonville-based MPS Group Inc. announced that Modis International, its United Kingdom information technology unit, acquired Netlogic, which provides computer service and maintenance specialists in England.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
