Fundraisers Give Event Some Wellie

Wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of scores of volunteers who donned their wellies to raise aware-ness of dementia.

Hundreds of people throughout the region took part in the Alzheimer's Society's annual Memory Walk on Saturday.

Families took to the streets for the Newcastle branch's hike, which started at the Millennium Bridge and continued along the Quayside to the business park in Elswick.

More than 60 people also joined the Durham and Chester-le-Street Alzheimer's Society's event.

The three-mile walk, by the Wear at Chester-le-Street, was organised with help from the district council and financial support from Tesco. The chairman of Chester-le-Street District Council, Coun Ralph Harrison, addressed the walkers before the start and presented certificates at the end.

Branch Chairman Patrick Nethercot said: "The turnout was excellent given the weather prospects, but it stopped raining soon after we set off. …
