In a Comfort Zone; Leak Is So Good in UF's Offense, He Scripts Plays

GAINESVILLE - Sometime this morning, Chris Leak will walk into Florida's offensive meeting room and write down the first 12 plays he wants the seventh-ranked Gators to run Saturday night at No. 13 Tennessee.

When Florida's senior quarterback is finished, Gators second-year coach Urban Meyer and offensive coordinator Dan Mullen will uncover the board on which they wrote the first 12 plays they want to run.

Their lists likely will match.

That's how much more knowledgeable and comfortable Leak is with Meyer's offense this season.

Last season, Meyer and Mullen were the only ones writing a list. This season, Leak even has override authority.

"That's Chris Leak's offense now," Meyer said.

Leak doesn't just pull those 12 plays out of his head. He talks to his receivers, backs and offensive linemen, then uses their input to come up with his list.

Meyer and Mullen talk with the rest of the offensive staff, then use their input to come up with their list.

So far, both lists have been nearly identical.

"I think a lot of it is just his overall understanding of the offense, and that's why it changed this year," Mullen said of Leak. "He really knows what we're trying to accomplish within the game plan each week. He's really involved in developing the game plan with us."

Leak said he didn't feel comfortable enough to do that until last spring. Now he suggests plays all the time and is vocal about his preferences for certain plays in certain situations.

"I feel a lot more comfortable in the offense now," said Leak, who has completed 67.8 percent of his passes for 600 yards and seven touchdowns in Florida's two games this season. "Coach comes to me all the time and asks me all the time what I like to run, what plays am I comfortable with. I always give him the top plays I'm real comfortable with and I think the guys around me are very comfortable with. …
