Last-Minute Drive Wins Game for Ridgeview

Article excerpt

The game between Ridgeview and Middleburg high schools last week may be the most exciting game played the entire season in the county.

Trailing by five points with just 12 seconds left in the game, quarterback Derek Hatcher rolled out to his right and threw a perfect pass to fellow sophomore wide receiver Tyler Bass. Bass hauled it in and sprinted into the end zone for the winning score.

"There was a will to win out there tonight. You saw us take the lead, do everything wrong to lose the lead, and you also saw us execute at the end to get the lead back," said head coach Tom MacPherson.

Ridgeview's last-minute heroics were set up by a late Broncos score. On a fourth-and-3 from the Panthers' 16-yard line, Middleburg's Tony Cannaday threw a slant to Chase Weiskopf, who broke a tackle and made it into the end zone for a 20-15 lead. The score capped an 11-play, 72-yard drive.

Cannaday looked brilliant on the drive, finding Kentrel Davis over the middle for a 17-yard reception, and scrambling for a critical 8-yard pickup two plays prior to Middleburg's touchdown. The drive was aided by a personal foul as Cannaday was hit while out of bounds by a Ridgeview defender. The penalty advanced the ball to the Panthers' 15-yard line.

Earlier in the week, MacPherson tapped freshman quarterback Demario Kohn on the shoulder, and told him he'd be suiting up for the varsity game Friday night. Kohn made the most of his opportunity. Trailing by 5 points with just 4:15 left in the game, Kohn lined his offense up in the shotgun formation, found a hole up the middle, and scored on a 6-yard run. After Hatcher's conversion, the Panthers led 15-12.

Setting up the play was a pass interference call on the Middleburg defense. On fourth-and-2 from the 28-yard-line, Hatcher attempted to go for the win with a pass down the left sideline. …
