JOSEF Franc and George Stancl captured third place for Newcastle in yesterday's Premier League Pairs at Glasgow, where Shane Parker and Danny Bird retained the title for the host club.

Franc was the top scorer during the group stage with his three victories and one third place counting for 14 points under the special scoring format in pairs racing of 4-3-2-0.

Stancl, who had partnered Parker to last year's triumph by the Tigers, won the Diamonds' other qualifying race against Edinburgh.

Newcastle topped their group to set up a semi-final showdown against Glasgow only for Franc to make his worst start of the afternoon, enabling Parker and Bird to settle into the middle places for a 5-4 win despite Stancl taking the chequered flag.

Somerset had dominated the other group but suffered a shock defeat by Sheffield in the second semi-final to leave them facing the Diamonds for third place.

Rebels captain Magnus Zetterstrom crashed and was excluded, leaving Franc and Stancl the simple task of following round Emil Kramer to grab a 5-4 success and make the podium.

Bird led the whole of the final and Parker's third place kept the trophy in Glasgow's hands.
