Dive into a Thriving Night Life on Bay Street

Article excerpt

Bay Street's stock is up. The old girl was looking the most vibrant I'd seen her when I visited the new Dive Bar downtown last Friday.

Bar crawlers will love its ease of location, between Mark's Downtown and TSI - three stylized spots in a row: eclectic, rocker-chic and indie.

As snooty as that "critical mass" term is, I guess that's what Bay Street night life has achieved. The sidewalks and street teem with those hopping from one door to the next, pausing to smoke cigarettes and chew the fat with their fellow Friday night living-it-uppers.

The night I was out, there were even entry lines at peak times. The lines moved quickly, and it was worth the bit of patience to see what's going on at the tipping point - Dive Bar just had its grand opening Sept. 8.

The newbie initially struck me as sort of familiar-looking. Oh yes, I'd seen it in my mind's eye when I've daydreamed about the kind of nightspot I'd (hypothetically) open. Makes sense since Dive Bar has the same ownership as Mark's - a club owner I consider to have an admirable vision to please all five senses.

A Led Zeppelin concert played on a flat screen behind the bar, and Bob Dylan even found his way into the men's room (yes, I peeked), hanging with pin-up girls and a Lynyrd Skynyrd poster with some chick in an American flag bikini. God bless America.

Generic hunks posed with lasso rope adorn the ladies room, which is more Spencer's Gifts than sexy, but still more fun than any other bathroom in town.

The music is a good mix of dance-worthy classic rock - David Bowie, Blondie, etc. …
