Onions - Why It All Ended in Tears for Tony

THIS is the world champion onion green fingered gardener Tony Cuthbert turned his back on family and friends to grow.

The monster took up so much of his time and effort that he fell out with his wife.

It tips the scales at a whopping 14lb 14.25oz - almost twice the weight of Tony's new grandson William - making it one of the biggest onions ever grown.

And it scooped the first time entrant a pounds 1,000 prize in superveg growers' contest the 27th annual World Leek and Onion Championships.

Tony, of Warkworth, Northumberland, said: "It only hit home how big the onion was when I held William, who was born at about 8lbs.

"He seemed a good weight. But then I thought about how big the onion was and it was nearly double him.

"I've been retired for 10 years and when I retired I did away with my wristwatch.

"Now I'm a very poor timekeeper. …
