Air passengers will soon be whizzing off to Warsaw from Durham Tees Valley after another operator joined the airport.

Low-cost airline Wizz Air announced today it will start the new flights to the capital of Poland from July 2007.

The good news comes weeks after Ryanair confirmed a route to Spain from Durham Tees Valley. And it provides a further boost after bmibaby's bombshell announcement in September that it was withdrawing its services.

John Stephenson, chief commercial officer of Wizz Air, said the airport is "ideally placed" and "provides excellent connectivity to the neighbouring cities".

"We believe that the good economics together with its operational flexibility and the development potential of the airport will make it a perfect fit for Wizz Air," he said. "Surely our new passengers from Tees Valley will enjoy our low fares and excellent services as much as our Polish travellers, who are already familiar with Wizz Air as the largest low cost carrier in Central and Eastern Europe. …
