New Flights Are a Boost for Airport

Two low-cost airlines have announced that they will be operating five routes out of Durham Tees Valley Airport from next year.

Two of the routes - to Barcelona and Faro in Portugal - are completely new while the other three - to Malaga, Palma and Alicante - replace ones which had been operated by bmibaby.

Bmibaby announced last month that it was withdrawing all its services from the airport.

But that was followed quickly by Ryanair's announcement of a new route to Barcelona Girona, then, the next week, Scottish web-based airline flyglobespan's said it was to launch a further four routes, in addition to its service to Tenerife.

And there could be more to come, as additional routes for summer 2007 are expected to be announced in the near future.

Flyglobespan will initially operate the Alicante, Faro and Palma flights three times a week from Durham Tees Valley with the Malaga operating four times each week.

The initial programme is:

Malaga ( commences March 30 with prices from pounds 44.99;

Palma ( commences March 30 ( prices from pounds 39.99

Alicante ( commences April 1 ( prices from pounds 44.99

Faro ( commences April 1 ( prices from pounds 44.99

All prices include taxes.

This choice and variety of flights make available the best of Spain's Costas, Portugal's ever-popular Algarve and holiday island Majorca and also gives travellers flexibility in choosing the duration of their holiday break.

This huge commitment from flyglobespan will totally transform the holiday options for the region.

Flyglobespan, one of the UK's fastest-growing airlines, is already known to the area. The airline recently announced a weekly winter sun flight from Durham Tees Valley to Tenerife starting on November 7.

This summer programme emphasises their commitment to bring more low-fares flights to the region.
