TODAY'S workplace is very different from what it was 10 or even five years ago. Work and employment patterns have changed significantly with the introduction of new technologies.

These advances also brought with them a new set of business challenges that need to be addressed in order for businesses to gain an advantage in a highly competitive marketplace.

The widespread adoption of voice and data networks has provided the platform for Microsoft, in partnership with Gold Partners such as Croft, to develop their vision of "unified communications": the coming together of disparate methods of individual, team, partner and customer communications into an integrated, easy-to-use, "people-centric" range of technologies.

Established methods of communication, such as e-mail, fixed and mobile telephony, will continue to play a key role but will be enhanced to run alongside Microsoft's Live Communications Server.

This will enable the benefits of instant messaging, such as Microsoft Messenger, long considered personal computing applications to be brought into a secure business environment. …
