A man died several hours after being found unconscious on a town centre street with a head injury.

Today a suspect was being questioned over the death which police say is being treated as suspicious.

The victim, 23-year-old Andrew Pearson, a factory worker, of Durham Road, South Stanley, was found by a passer-by shortly after midnight yesterday in a minor road between the top of Front Street and the main bus station in Stanley, County Durham.

He was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of North Durham in Durham City where he died yesterday afternoon.

A spokesman for Durham Police said today it was thought the man, who was single, had been in Montgomery's bar, which used to be known as Parker's and was originally the Old Blue Boar, earlier on Sunday night.

He left at about midnight to walk to his home a short distance away.

But a few minutes later Mr Pearson was found slumped unconscious on the ground on the minor road, which is directly opposite the entrance to the Supa Snooker hall. …
