Around 1,000 jobs could be created in a new office, hotel and shopping complex planned next to Newcastle United's football ground.

The proposals are a boost for plans to create an office quarter in the Gallowgate area of the city centre.

The development, costing around pounds 55m, is planned on land at present used for car parking next to the Strawberry pub across the road from St James' Park.

Plans involve a 10-storey hotel with 160 bedrooms, two office blocks seven and three storeys high, both with shops on the ground floor, and a 110-space car park with 34 public spaces.

The scheme will swallow up 294 existing parking places and there will be a public open space in the shape of a pedestrian piazza.

Developers say the scheme will complete the "boulevard" route with a pedestrian link between St James' Metro station to the city centre. The site is close to several major developments completed or in the pipeline. …
