INTERNATIONAL sales growth at Amazon.com, led by the UK, outstripped that in its domestic market in the United States as the online retailer's profits fell but still beat analysts' expectations.

While North American sales rose 21% to $1.26 billion ([pounds sterling]673 million) in the quarter, sales from the international sites, which include France, Germany and Japan and the UK, increased by 29% to $1.05 billion, closing the gap on the US.

Overall it said third-quarter net profit fell to $19 million, from $30 million this time last year, but sales were up 24% to $2.31 billion from $1.86 billion, helped by a sharp rise in sales of electronics.

promise that growth in its technology spending would slow this quarter, pushed its shares 14% higher.

Amazon has spent heavily on improving its

website to stay ahead of competitors. …
