Euell Not Have to Wait Long for the Goals

Article excerpt

Jason Euell will prove a good signing for Gareth Southgate - and score goals.

That's despite the fact he was wayward with his shooting against the Geordies.

The big thing for me is that Euell is getting into the right positions.

When you keep doing that the goals will eventually come.

Jason would have been disappointed not to get a goal in the derby because he deserved one.

He is creating chances for himself and for his team-mates and this will bring goals.

The bonus for Southgate is that he can play Euell in the middle or up front.

In fact Euell could get quite a few chances alongside Yakubu in the next few weeks because of Mark Viduka's broken toe.

Viduka was quiet against Newcastle while he was on the pitch, but he will be sorely missed while he is in rehab because he holds the ball up, and can score great goals.

Having said that, Boro probably benefited from the team changes when Viduka went off because we had the extra man in midfield when Fabio Rochemback came on.

But it helps that Yakubu is on fire at the moment and I was delighted for him to see him score the winner.

That's three in three for Yak. He has shown that he has still got his goal touch.

That's what happens in football. Strikers go through lean spells and then the goals start to flow again.

He's missed a few lately but he's scoring as well and, like Euell, he's getting into the right positions.

Yakubu was unlucky not to be a provider as well. He made a great run from his favoured position on the left to set up Rochemback, who should have scored.

Yakubu can play up front by himself if necessary but you need two strikers and, whenever Viduka is missing, Euell is the best option.

There's Maccarone, but he's not good enough to play week in and week out in the Premiership.

Good luck to the lad, but his reception from the fans was unbelievable when he came on against Newcastle.

I scored over 100 goals for the club and had my fair share of booing in my time.

Nothing would please me more than to see Maccarone come on and score the winner against Man City on Monday, but he needs more to his game to earn a regular place. …
