Gateshead Are Rocked by Baker Injury Blow

Gateshead, who entertain First Division Harrogate RA in the first round of the UniBond League Cup tonight, suffered a double whammy in Cheshire on Saturday, (writes Jeff Bowron).

Former Middlesbrough defender Steve Baker was withdrawn at half-time with a hamstring injury, and a late Steve Connor strike denied the Tynesiders all three points at fifth-top Witton Albion.

Top scorer David Southern's 12th goal of the season had given Gateshead a 55th-minute lead, and put the frontman only two goals behind the UniBond Premier Division's leading marksman, Burscough's Cieran Kilheeney.

Baker, sent off at Sutton Coldfield the previous weekend, is now set to miss the next six games through injury and suspension.

The ex-Scarborough captain missed six matches earlier in the season with a hamstring problem, and with fellow defender Richard Flynn already sidelined, Gateshead's options at the back are limited.

Assistant manager Ian Bogie said: "Losing Baker with another hamstring is disappointing and it took us 20 minutes to get a foothold against a good Witton side. …
