PAL Makes $9,000 on Nissan Truck Raffle; Dedicated Volunteer David Gregory Held the Winning Ticket

In an effort to raise money to finance its programs and a new gym, the Clay County Police Activities League sold raffle tickets for a souped-up truck.

While the group made $9,000 on the raffle, organizers and supporters seemed more delighted when the winning ticket was held by one of its most ardent helpers.

Of the approximately 1,800 tickets sold, one of the 16 David Gregory purchased was the one Dan Skinner, Clay County director of the State Attorney's Office, pulled from the box filled with entries.

"It couldn't happen to a better guy," Deputy Rod Houldson said after the 10 a.m. drawing at the courthouse Wednesday. "He [Gregory] does so much for us."

As activities director for PAL, Houldson knows. Gregory is his football commissioner - the person who oversees every aspect of the Pop Warner program, from creating the teams and hiring coaches to handling complaints.

"That's awesome!" cheered Patrice Bell, executive assistant for PAL. "He has volunteered thousands of hours to us."

On speaker phone just after the drawing, Gregory said, "I'm ecstatic."

The 36-year-old Middleburg resident helped Houldson this past year in making a successful football season for 200 youths.

"This was our first year together, and he was a huge asset to me," Houldson said.

But the married father of four downplayed the enthusiasm others had for his win. "I'm glad the proceeds go to PAL," he said.

The dark blue truck, valued at $40,000, was from Mike Shad Nissan on Wells Road. Representatives of the company, Jim Jackson and Jim Lampke, were at the drawing to congratulate the winner.

Sgt. Darin Lee, PAL's executive director, offered thanks to the many who made the fundraiser a success: Houldson; Bell; Deputy John Jordan, who oversees the Explorers; Noelle Marx, Big PAL coordinator; Sharon Buonocore and Linda and Billy Vigue of the Bear Runners, a group of athletes from the Bear Run community. …
