His is a fate Alan Shearer or David Beckham will never have to face on retiring from football.

But for Mike Mahoney it's an everyday occurrence.

Due to start work at the Royal Mail, in Bristol, by 5am, he has to drag his body out of bed at the unearthly hour of 3.30am.

Yet there isn't a murmur of complaint from the one-time soccer hero who quit the sport he loved without a bean to his name.

"I'm always asked the question about the wages today and, yes, I would love to earn sixty grand or whatever a week," Mike told me.

"However, the obscene money apart, I believe football was better in my day. There was less pressure, it was fun. I haven't a solitary regret.

"The money has always been different from one era to another.

"What we got may be peanuts now but we were extremely well paid in comparison to Wor Jackie Milburn. …
