Hit Movie Boosts Sales of Jacket Fit for Queen

ONE of the North's most famous firms has had a box office boost - thanks to Helen Mirren's performance in the movie The Queen.

Since the story of the Royal Family's reaction to Princess Diana's death opened in America, Barbour jackets are jumping off the shelves on the other side of the Atlantic.

In the film, Mirren is often filmed walking majestically in one of the firm's distinctive green wax coats.

Now the jackets have picked up a dedicated following in New York, where the film recently opened, with American Royal Family fans desperate to get their hands on them.

All of which is great news for J Barbour and Sons, which was founded in 1894 and has always been based in South Shields.

According to Maggie Archambault, manager of the Barbour store in Manhattan, the jackets have been selling like hot cakes, with hundreds of buyers saying it is due to the film's popularity.

She added: "The first thing they say is 'have you seen the movie The Queen? …
