Southside Notebook; Gingerbread Houses Needed for Holiday Fundraiser Jewish Community Alliance to Host Book Festival Next Month

The Gingerbread House Extravaganza is coming to The Avenues mall from Wednesday, Nov. 22, to Friday, Jan 5, and bakers and builders are needed to fill the display area with custom candy and cookie creations.
The event is organized by The Rotary Club of South Jacksonville to raise money for Ronald McDonald House, HabiJax, and other local charities. Visitors can stroll through the display for a donation of $5 per adult and $2 per child every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Anyone interested in building a gingerbread house should visit the event web site at www.rotarycharity.org. Gingerbread houses need to be completed by mid-November to be exhibited.
-- Ethics, humor and sports are all part of the Jewish Community Alliance's 10th annual Jewish Book Festival, from Tuesday, Nov. 7, through Saturday, Nov. 18, at the JCA at 8505 San Jose. Blvd.
Nationally renowned authors will discuss their latest works, answer questions from the audience and sign copies of their books, while limited copies will be available for sale. All programs begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free to the community with the exception of the Patrons Party.
The first author appears on Tuesday, Nov. 7 - Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, author of A Code of Jewish Ethics: Vol. 1, You Shall Be Holy.
On Thursday, Nov. 9 - baseball player Ron Blomberg, author of Designated Hebrew: The Ron Blomberg Story.
On Wednesday, Nov. 15- Rich Cohen, author of Sweet and Low, the story of a struggle over a fortune made by the invention of Sweet 'N Low.
On Thursday, Nov. 16 - Karen Taylor-Good, author of On Angels' Wings. Taylor-Good is a writer, singer and motivational speaker.
The final event is the Patrons Party at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, with Sam Wolfson and Bryan Fogel, co-authors of Jewtopia: The Chosen Book for the Chosen People.
Tickets start at $75 per person, complete with dinner, although other levels ranging up to $375 are available. …
