Take your time

the talk this week has been "should we have put the clocks back last weekend?" It happens every year and it's not a new idea. (Benjamin Franklin first suggested it in 1734) and most countries of the world do it. They save up an hour in the Spring and reclaim it in the Fall (autumn). So we can remember to put the clocks backward or forward by saying "Spring forward, Fall back".

But could there be a better way of spending the hour we saved in the spring? Last Sunday we stopped the clocks at 2am when all thinking people were asleep. If only we stopped the clocks at 2pm the entire country could use the extra hour to do the kind of things they'd always wanted to do if only they had the time. They could visit a friend in hospital, write home to mother or take granny some flowers. We could call it the Good Neighbour Hour. Sadly I'm afraid it wouldn't work and nothing would happen. Unless we planned in advance how we would use the hour, we would just fritter it away. We know we have to budget our money or we run into trouble. But when it comes to budgeting our time we can be hopeless. In Chester Cathedral there is an old clock bearing these words:

When I was a child, I laughed and wept; time crept.

When at school, I learned and talked; time walked.

Later I grew up and became a man; time ran.

Soon I shall find when travelling on; time gone.

Will Christ have saved my soul by then? Amen.

LOUD REPORT

We get some strange people on our Church Councils don't we? I think some of them only use the Church as a kind of soapbox so they can get something off their chests. …
