IN WHAT appears to be a perfectly average British Muslim family, there starts what seems a perfectly average day of Ramadan fasting.

Rani Moorthy's heartfelt, if baggy, piece begins beautifully, with assured, gently humorous scenesetting. But with the arrival of the uncompromising grownup sons, a somewhat foreseeable religious tinderbox looks set to be ignited.

There's also a mysterious rucksack packed with Allah-only-knows-what hidden under the table.

Director Iqbal Khan does a fine job of establishing a credibly loving/ fractious domestic atmosphere, even if the script requires everyone to get both repetitively volatile and ideologically inconsistent.

Moorthy herself plays the mother, with great warmth and tenderness.

Yet Khan's idea of filling the stage with plates, bowls and jars, and then making the cast unwrap and eat imaginary food is perpetually irritating. …
