Childhood sweethearts Iain and Alison Tear eventually tied the knot after 21 years.

The newlyweds chose the setting of the Cyprus as a backdrop to their wedding, which took place on October 20.

Alison, 37, a sales assistant, said: "We had been away for a romantic weekend in Edinburgh and I had no idea he was going to propose.

"When he did, I was taken completely by surprise. My eyes started to well up. I couldn't have wished for anything more."

Iain, 38, a financial adviser, chose the top of the Scott Monument, Edinburgh, to pop the question. The couple have four children, Emma, 19, Glenn, 13, Laura, five, and Chloe, 18 months, who were each said to be "ecstatic" about the news.

The couple had their first child, Emma, in 1987 and began their engagement with the arrival of Chloe in 2005, bringing much delight to Alison and Iain, who had recently suffered the tragedy of miscarriage.

Even though the couple enjoy a large family, they nevertheless chose to share their day with just each other, thus rekindling memories of the first time they had met at Ashington Football Club in 1985. …
