GIVING anything less than five stars to last night's performance would reveal a bankruptcy of music appreciation. Worse still, it would be ignoring the triumph over demons that have plagued the former Beach Boy for decades.

That he was even able to take the stage ensures he merited every standing ovation he received.

The night was arranged in three sections.

The first featured Beach Boys classics, such as Do It Again and California Girls mixing with mere mortals Break Away and Sail On Sailor, and obscure album tracks such as Add Some Music To Your Day.

Throughout, Brian showed he was as inventive as ever. Shying away from high falsetto notes, he dropped into intricate, midrange harmonies that complemented the original tune. The highlight was a breathtaking Good Vibrations.

Then it was time for the main event - the album Pet Sounds in its entirety. …
