Newcastle's Mark Clauzel stormed to a sensational victory at the Senior ABA Championships in Coventry.

A triumphant Clauzel now marches on to the national quarter-finals in Liverpool tomorrow with the semis scheduled at the same venue the following night.

Glenn McCrory, who established the Northumbria club in the Newbiggin Hall district of Newcastle, travelled to Coventry to back his man, who beat Aston's James Jevans when his corner threw in the towel in the third round.

McCrory told me: "I thought Mark was different class ( it was an outstanding victory. The lad is getting better and better.

"He was 14-1 up at the end of the second and the bout was about to be stopped on the outclassed rule when Jevans' corner threw in the towel."

Area secretary Ron Harvey called the Clauzel performance "stunning" and went on: "To only lose two bouts against the Midlands on their patch speaks volumes for the healthy state of North East boxing. …
