*AS soon as the applause has died down, business awards frequently have the habit of turning into a curse. But even so, the fall of Shaid Luqman takes some beating. Barely two years after he was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year, Luqman's company and reputation lie in tatters. Lexi Holdings, his property-finance firm based in Manchester but with an office in Mayfair, has collapsed with debts of [pounds sterling]100 million. Another Luqman company, Modern Living, has also gone under. Their demise comes after Luqman, 37 and once reckoned to be worth [pounds sterling]250 million, was described as "completely dishonest" by the judge at a court hearing and banned from acting as a company director for 15 years.

* THE great PR push to rehabilitate GlaxoSmithKline's highly remunerated boss Jean-Pierre Garnier, pictured, is in full flight, with no less than two interviews with the great man appearing on the same day. Is City Spy alone, though, in thinking that his choice of inspiration could be considered a tad tasteless? "My heroes are not CEOs. The person I really admire is the blue-collar worker who puts his kids through college then dies of a heart attack."

*GARNIER goes on to say: "I have met lots of famous people - they put on their pants in the same way as everyone else." Eh?

* IT's true, there is a snake in the London offices of Goldman Sachs. It's a rubber one, wound round a plant in the office of Richard Campbell-Breedon, who enjoys a healthy rivalry with Simon Dingemans in the adjacent room. When asked why he has the snake, Campbell-Breedon replied: "It reminds me who is next door."

* ENGLAND batsman Kevin Pietersen is a big fan of energy drink Red Bull - doubtless he will guzzle some before stepping out to face the Australians in next week's Ashes opener. But in the City, the high-caffeine beverage can seriously damage your trading book. …
