It's a homecoming he will never forget.

Gateshead-born Tim Peacock led his Royal Navy warship up the Tyne as his family watched from the banks of the river.

The commanding officer of HMS Monmouth is Newcastle United daft and there was even a special surprise in store for him.

Tim and 17 members of his crew were given a personal guided tour of St James' Park by NUFC chairman Freddy Shepherd.

Tim said: "This is a very special visit for me personally as I was born in Gateshead and educated at Newcastle's Royal Grammar School.

"I have followed Newcastle since the 70s. We're based in Portsmouth at the moment, but I get back for matches whenever my commitments allow.

"There are a few Newcastle fans in the crew as well and we have Sky Sports on the ship so we can keep up to date.

"We thank everyone at NUFC, particularly Mr Shepherd."

The Toon chairman presented United shirts to the visitors with HMS Monmouth emblazoned on the back. …
