Guard Supporters Plan Fundraiser; the Goal Is $1 Million by Year's End for a Fund That Assists Military Families

Supporters of the Georgia National Guard are making a fund-raising push to zero in on their $1 million target by year's end.

Professional athletes Tim Hudson and Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves, Brian Finneran and Keith Brooking of the Atlanta Falcons, and a platoon of corporate executives are hosting a $1,000-a-person reception Nov. 14. Besides the glitzy affair, individual contributors are kicking in by check and credit cards, some with amounts as small as $10 a month.

The money for the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation goes toward assisting with the financial headaches of deployment and injuries. More than 200 members of the Guard have requested aid so far this year.

Included in those receiving grants are three families from Richmond County, eight from Chatham, two from Effingham and seven from Liberty County.
