CARLISLE finally experienced a memorable road trip for all the right reasons as they gained their first away win of the season, writes MIKE CORRY.

Following the unsatisfactory performance in the FA Cup exit at Swin-don, the following week has seen much soul-searching on the training pitch, as well as seeking the right tactical solution.

And manager Neil McDonald could not have been more pleased with the attitude of his players as they put their Swindon nightmare behind them to produce a battling defensive performance he would have been proud of in his playing days.

While the performance was never one to stir the emotions of a football connoisseur, the importance of not losing was evident, as the Cumbrians to a man defended with their lives.

And their cause was helped with an early goal that gave them something to build on. It was the icing on the cake for McDonald.

"Before the game I asked the players to have a better performance than last week against Swindon," he said.

"I certainly got that. I asked them not to get beat and they've come up trumps by winning their first away game.

"Defensively we were very sound and the only disappointing thing is we didn't pass the ball well enough to get into our attacking play.

"But we've done that plenty of times this season and come away with nothing. We do work hard on the training ground to try to put things right and making sure we're all prepared. I think that showed today on the defensive side of our game."

It was a dream start for the Cumbrians with the crucial goal coming on five minutes.

Kevin Harper picked out the forward movement of Karl Hawley whose pace took him clear only to have his heels clipped by Shaun Maher, who was fortunate to receive only a yellow card.

Hawley picked himself up to send Neil Moss the wrong way from the resulting penalty. …
