All Rhodes Lead to Medal Succes for Andrew

Judo starlet Andrew Stephenson has struck gold on a trip to America ( against some of the best judoka in the world.

The Boldon teenager and friend Stuart Pateman topped the tree in the team event at the Ocean State International in Rhode Island.

Andrew had previously taken bronze medals in the under-20s' under-60 kilogramme KYU grade section and the under-60kgs brown belt category and silver in the under-60kgs black belt division, Stuart also clinching bronze in the under-66kgs black belt section.

Andrew, a member of Washington Judo Club, had been to the USA before and been the guest of the Mayo Quanchi Judo Club, one of the most successful in the country and organisers of the Ocean State event.

He went back after competing at the Great Northern Judo Championships in Newcastle and the BJC Home International in Norwich.

On the same day Andrew was in action in America, his younger brother James took the gold in the under-38kgs section at the British Judo Association Under-18 Open at Gateshead Leisure Centre. …
