A father-of-two has given cancer patients a chance of relaxing therapy after he received the treatment while battling the disease.

Mark Wheater wanted to say thank you to staff at the Holistic Cancer Care Centre at the James Cook University Hospital for the help they gave him.

The supervisor in the sterile services department at the hospital was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease in 2002.

The 45-year-old from Acklam endured six months of gruelling chemotherapy and a month of radiotherapy.

"When you are going through your treatment it is like being in a dream. I think part of me shut down to deal with it," he said.

With the support of his 50-year-old wife Susan, and his children Richard, 19, and Rachel, 21, he finished the treatment.

He then had soothing reiki and Indian head massage treatments at the centre.

"It was fantastic, so relaxing. It made me feel so much better, rather than going and knowing you are having chemicals put into your body which made me feel like I was dying," said Mark. …
