College friends inspired to raise memorial cash

A brave teenager who lost her battle with cystic fibrosis has inspired classmates to raise hospital funds.

Friends of Laura Appleby, of Redcar, who died on October 23 just days after her 18th birthday, are now raising money in her memory. The group, who were all studying administration with Laura at Redcar and Cleveland College, are planning a Christmas fair and party and a sponsored walk.

The students plan to donate the cash raised to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. They hope it will be used for entertainment equipment for teenagers on the young people's unit where Laura was treated.

Laura, a former pupil of Redcar's Sacred Heart School, was invited as guest of honour at the official opening of the unit in November 2004. The unit is part of the children's ward and aims to give young people their own facilities and a bit of privacy.

Laura said at the time she was "thrilled" to attend the opening of the unit, which staff called her "second home". …
