A brave shopkeeper wrestled a baseball bat from a would-be robber.

Chandar Mohan, 57, was opening his newsagent on Rectory Road, Gateshead, when a man came in with a scarf tied round his face demanding cash.

Waving the bat, he screamed at Mr Mohan to hand over his money.

But Mr Mohan, known to everyone as Moni, grabbed the bat and pulled it from the man's hands, before trying to pull off his scarf. The attacker then ran off empty-handed.

Mr Mohan, a married father-of-one, was sorting out newspapers in his shop, Basudev News, when the man came in.

He said: "I saw he had a scarf tied round his face. I looked again and saw he had a baseball bat. I wasn't behind the counter so I was face-to-face with him

"He said 'Give me your money'. I grabbed the bat and pulled it out of his hands. …
