An excellent entry of 91 boys and girls took part in the 32nd Northumberland Under-19 International Junior Championships at The Parks, North Shields, last weekend.

Competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Sweden were all playing to win one of the trophies.

Unfortunately, North East representation in the premier events was limited, with only Perry Cook and Neil Kilbourn competing, but not managing to get past the first round.

The premier boys' singles suffered from the absence through illness of the two top seeds, but still produced some excellent games.

After defeating Nico Ruponen (Sweden) in the semi-finals, Scotland's Stephen McPhail edged out Petter Yngvesson in the final.

In the girls' premier singles, neither Caroline Harvey of Wales nor Gillian Sloan of Scotland could get past their English opponents, and it was left to top seed Jessica Carlsson (Sweden) to fight off the English challenge to clinch the trophy.

As last year, the Scottish boys proved to be dominant in the premier doubles, where they were strongly represented in the semi-finals.

Peter Hockey and Duncan Leith only just overcame Richard Morris and Paul Van Rietvelde, while McPhail and Kenny Young beat Kristoffer Lundqvist and Jonatan Nord.

The final went to Hockey and Leith, who had been last year's runners-up.

The girls' premier doubles produced the real shock of the weekend when the young English pairing of Lauren Smith and Hayley Rogers toppled top seeds Munn-Tzin Bong and Lim, before beating Chapman and Lauren Allinson in the final.

The final event in the premier programme was the mixed doubles.

Here again there was a strong Scottish presence in the later stages.

The Yorkshire pair of Allinson and Ian Mercer were left to fight it out with the Scots, but they succumbed in a tight three-ender to Alison Marr and Young 17-21, 21-11, 21-16. …
