IT'S THE PITS! Lewis Conks out as He Starts McLaren Testing

LEWIS HAMILTON made a stuttering start to his new life as a Formula One driver yesterday - quite literally.

The 21-year-old Stevenage racer's car suffered a mechanical failure early on in his first test since being confirmed as McLaren's No 2 driver and required two stewards to give him a push.

McLaren team boss Ron Dennis announced on Friday that Hamilton will partner reigning world champion Fernando Alonso for the 2007 F1 season, making the GP2 series champion the first black driver to compete in the sport.

Dennis, who is not normally renowned for taking such gambles with his driver line-up, is confident Hamilton will live up to his rich promise. But he took a cautious approach, claiming last week that it would not be unrealistic to expect Hamilton to win one race next season.

Given that fellow Brit Jenson Button took over 100 grands prix to reach the top step of the podium, achieving a single victory would be no mean feat. …
