TRUCKIN'

WHICH ONE COMES WITH A DVD PLAYER?

I've been watching a lot of TV commercials lately, and they've got me thinking about buying a pickup truck. But I can't decide: Do I want the one that is so tough the Loch Ness Monster spits it out, or the one that blows up other cars who dare to ask for a jump-start?

RISE AND WHINE

SKYNYRD'S NEW FRIENDS AT ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

How can they call it a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when Alice Cooper, Deep Purple and John Mellencamp aren't in, but Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers are?

Nine artists were nominated last week for the Cleveland-based Hall's Class of 2007. Of those, two or three might be worthy.

-- Van Halen: Sure, put them in, if only to see if a fistfight breaks out at the induction ceremony.

-- R.E.M.: Very influential. And the all-star jam on It's The End of the World as We Know It would be epic.

-- Chic: Heck of a good disco band. But this ain't the Disco Hall of Fame. Sorry, guys.

-- Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five: They pretty much invented rap. This isn't the Rap Hall of Fame either, but the Five were so influential they probably deserve a spot.

-- Dave Clark Five: Glad All Over, Bits and Pieces and Catch Us If You Can were great British Invasion singles. But were they really any better than Herman's Hermits or Jerry and the Pacemakers? Not really.

-- Ronettes: Be My Baby is an undeniable classic. But Hall of Fame worthy? Nah.

-- Patti Smith: A fine singer and songwriter, but not even close to Hall of Fame material.

-- Joe Tex: Quick, name me a Joe Tex song. I didn't think so.

-- Stooges: A big influence on the punk movement, but their music is nothing special, and that's what should really count here.
