Clay High has begun a holiday care-package drive for U.S. soldiers in Iraq who have no family back home. Through today, the school will collect items for the packages, which will be sent to the Army's 3-2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Iraq. The top request from soldiers is homemade cookies, but other suggested donations are phone cards, paperback books, CDs, DVDs, cards and card games, puzzle books, journals, Hacky Sack game balls, stress/squeeze therapy balls, current magazines and candy. School officials are also seeking donations to help pay shipping cost and shoe boxes to use for packaging.

Donations should be brought to the school, 2025 Florida 16 West, Green Cove Springs. 529-2110.

-- The Clay High Chorus "Voices in Harmony" will perform at the Christmas on Walnut Street holiday celebration Friday, in downtown Green Cove Springs, near City Hall. Also, the chorus will hold its Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at Orange Avenue Baptist Church, 1106 N. Orange Ave., Green Cove Springs, and sing at the Clay High Band concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 at the school, 2025 Florida 16 West, Green Cove Springs. 529-3120.


The Secret Santa Breakfast, Thunderbolt Elementary's annual holiday gala, is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The event begins with pre-sold breakfast with Santa, followed by a performance by the school chorus. Next comes photos with Santa, a silent basket auction and holiday vendor sales. Also, the school chorus Holiday Concert is 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 14. 2020 Thunderbolt Road, Fleming Island. 278-5630.


The OakLeaf School will hold a Winter Festival 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. The event will include a vendor fair, Santa Claus, Secret Santa Workshop, food and drinks, bake sales and drawings. Admission is free. 4085 Plantation Oaks Blvd., Orange Park. 291-7380.
