Plans to build a new school for 630 pupils in East Middlesbrough have suffered a second setback.

Middlesbrough Council had hoped to get Government funding worth pounds 5m to replace Brambles, Thorntree and Caldicotes primary schools with a single school.

The council was unsuccessful in its bid from the Primary Capital Programme but is still hopeful it can go ahead with its plans with funding from future Government schemes.

Last year the council was unsuccessful in a first bid for pounds 9.5m for the school.

Brambles, Thorntree, and Caldicotes schools have falling school rolls and also need major repair work.

Middlesbrough Council still hopes to receive pounds 2m a year for 15 years under the Government's Every Child Matters scheme to replace or renew schools in areas of need from 2009.

The council also hopes to get an extra pounds 5m a year for building a renewal work through a pilot programme the Government is launching in 2008, which could benefit up to 25 councils. …
