When sea fog rolled into the Beaches on Monday afternoon, everyday scenes were transformed into magical ones by the wet, white mist.

People at the Jacksonville Beach pier said the murky, mystical look surprised and delighted them.

It was thick, but not so thick that they couldn't see well enough to enjoy the beach on that unusual day.

Anglers kept fishing, surfers kept surfing and beach-lovers continued strolling along the tide line.

"It's different; I like it when it's different," Toby Swearingen of Jacksonville's Southside said as he scanned the sand with his metal detector.

"It's kind of weird, it's neat."

The fog was caused by cool air from the northeast coming in over warmer water, said meteorologist Marie Trabert of the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.

While fog is "pretty typical" this time of year, she said the length of its stay and its soupy effects were enhanced by rain showers earlier that day. The moist ground allowed the fog to "maintain itself" and later that evening it continued to spread westward, enveloping much of Duval County.

"It's crazy, it's beautiful," said James McKenzie of Jacksonville's Westside, who strained to watch surfers catch the waves.

For the surfers, it was the waves that counted, not the weather.

From up on the pier, Hugh Thompson watched his sons, Cody, 17; Evan, 14, and Tristan, 10, surf with friends. …
