A father jailed after bullying his own blind son has been given years more behind bars for molesting a schoolgirl.

John Jewitt started a two year prison sentence only last month when he admitted cruelty to son Robert.

He took out his vicious temper on the defenceless youngster, asking questions his blindness meant he could never know then hitting him when he got the answers wrong.

Jewitt's systematic abuse during the 1990s - including pushing Robert's hand into hot food and throwing him out of a caravan in to the night - exposed him as a tyrant.

But the 43-year-old from East Oakwood, Hexham was also a sex attacker.

And after a Newcastle Crown Court jury found him guilty of two charges of sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl, Jewitt was given a further three years imprisonment to run consecutively to the cruelty sentence.

Judge Michael Cartlidge warned: "It's plain what the defendant did has had a very significant impact on the girl. …
