Support Is There for You, Says Survivor of Abuse

Liz had nowhere to turn to save herself from a partner who wrecked her life with physical and emotional abuse.

"I was broken and didn't feel like a person any more," she said. "I couldn't even think of standing up for myself."

Liz* had to suffer his violence for years. "He made me feel unworthy of existence and incapable of escape.

"It wasn't only the physical violence. It was the mental and emotional, every possible way he could abuse me," she said.

"I had absolutely no support - but if I had, it would have made an extreme difference to my life."

Liz knows attitudes to domestic violence have changed and today she would have found help.

She says women's help organisations like My Sister's Place are "absolutely incredible and made a real difference.

"My life was out of my control, there was no one to turn to for help and the police didn't have the zero tolerance they have now.

"But at My Sister's Place there is comfort and advice on everything. …
