A heartbroken daughter whose mother died the day she was due to fly to Cyprus has been told by holiday insurers she will not get her money back.

Jenny Wright, 57, from Guisborough, was devastated when her mother Ellen Race, 79, died on July 22.

Unfortunately it happened on the day that Jenny and her husband Laurence were due to fly to Cyprus for two weeks, with the couple paying out pounds 2,600 for the trip.

Jenny cancelled the trip and hoped to be compensated after she had paid pounds 80 for holiday insurance with Europ Assistance. But she was stunned when the insurers told her they would not refund her.

She said: "The doctor advised us not to go on holiday and we cancelled. Can you imagine us flying away on holiday and leaving my mum in hospital?

"We had to go see my mother's doctor in Bishop Auckland and he wrote to the insurers to say that her death was not anticipated when we booked the holiday in February. …
