This Scam Could Be a Whole Lotto Trouble

A Stockton mum is warning people to be on their guard against a Spanish lottery scam.

Trading standards officials across Teesside have received several calls expressing concern regarding letters from alleged lottery companies. Among them was Alison McArthur, who lives in Hartburn with her husband Peter and 11-year-old daughter Sophie.

Earlier this month, Mrs McArthur received a letter advising her she was a winner with the Spanish Lottery. But her suspicions were roused and she decided to fax the genuine company with the letter she received.

She was subsequently told it was a scam.

"I was advised that I had won a lot of money on the Spanish Lottery, which could have been true, as like many other Brits when on holiday I enter lotteries and competitions like I do at home," said 39-year-old Mrs McArthur.

"There is a telephone number which you contact, which is probably charged at an extremely high rate, and then from there I expect they swindle you out of an awful lot of money by whatever means. …
