Charities share a giant legacy

A leading scientist and lawyer from Yarm has left substantial bequests to causes close to his heart.

Graham Daryl Clifford Rushton died an 82-year-old widower in April, leaving pounds 3,214,149.

Part of his estate will be split between Cambridge University, the RNIB, training of a law student and his local church in Hutton Rudby.

Neighbours and acquaintances said Mr Rushton and his wife Jeanette, a linguist who died several years ago, never had children and they were not believed to have any close relatives in the UK.

But between them they enjoyed many hobbies, including travel, gardening and dogs, said a friend of the couple, Brian Dennis.

"He was quite reclusive and a very astute person," said Mr Dennis. "He did a degree in science and worked at ICI but he had an accident on business when he was quite young which left him partially-sighted.

"He then returned to study and completed a law degree and became the top lawyer for ICI. …
