Football: Leadbitter Sets Sights on Top

SUNDERLAND moved within three points of the play-off places yesterday but goalscorer Grant Leadbitter had his eyes on bigger things.

In a division where the only consistent thing is the inconsistency of its teams, the 20-year-old is refusing to rule out automatic promotion despite relegation being a more likely prospect when Roy Keane was appointed manager three months ago.

"We're three points off the play-offs but we're only seven points off the top two," said the 20-year-old after scoring a stunning second goal in the 2-0 win.

"It's a tight league and you've got to take every game and every day as it comes. "We know we're capable of doing the right things, which we have been recently, and if we do we've got a good chance.

"There's about 12 teams in the league who if they went up you wouldn't be surprised. It's a very strong league. I think it's the hardest to get out of in the world.

There's a lot of good teams and good players in this division. …
