Weinstein Rethinking Race; FOP Recommendation to Support Peyton for Mayor Gives Him Pause

Jacksonville mayoral candidate Mike Weinstein said Monday there's a 50-50 chance he'll drop out of the race to unseat incumbent John Peyton.

Weinstein said he's "rethinking" his run in next year's city election after learning Thursday that the local Fraternal Order of Police executive board was going to recommend that the rank and file police officers vote for the union to support Peyton.

Weinstein also said about 40 to 50 of his supporters from his unsuccessful 2003 bid for mayor have expressed concern with him moving forward with his campaign. He said those who've talked to him include Jaguars chief executive officer Wayne Weaver and team minority owner Tom Petway.

Most of Weinstein's 2003 supporters, including Weaver and Petway, have pledged their support to Peyton. Both candidates are Republicans.

Now some are suggesting there may be other ways for him to make a difference in the community, Weinstein said.

Peyton said Weinstein has been recruited heavily to run for state office, "and quite frankly, I think he would make a great legislator. …
