Winter begins Thursday ... but this is Florida.

Kids (and parents) don't have to stay cooped up indoors - it's unlikely that a blizzard will provide them with a good excuse to be couch potatoes. Instead, they can explore the area's natural resources by joining Little Talbot Island State Park rangers for a mini day camp.

The first program, intended for ages 6-12, will focus on how and why animals migrate. "Join the Migration" is a three-day camp from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 27-29, and participants should meet at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 2-3, head to Pavilion 1 in Little Talbot Island State Park for "Winter Escapes," a two-day series on the adventures of hiking. The camp will run from 1 to 3 p.m. both days and is for children 8 and older. After assembling a hiking pack on Tuesday, participants will embark on a 3.8-mile trail hike on Wednesday.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and participants need to wear closed-toe shoes to both camps. …
